New technology halved the costs of lithium batteries
Reseachers of MIT claimed that they have developed a new technology of making lithium batteries. This technology can either reduce the production costs of manufacturing or improve the perfomance of lithium batteries, make it's easy to recycle the batteries. This project is cooperated with a Spin-off company named 24M.
The recent production process of lithium batteries is invented 20 years ago which is inefficient and complicated. Jiang ye ming,Professor of MIT,founder of 24M, former founder of A123, created a concept named 'Liquid flow battery' with his colleagues five years ago. It means that electrode as a suspension of fine particles cycle in lithium batteries by way of the pumping. But analysis shows that liquid flow battery only suitable for low energy density battery. It will increase costs if applicated on high energy desity devices.
For this reason, Jiang's team improve the design. It called the new version technology as "Semi-solid battery": instead of flowing electrode material, it's a semi-solid liquid. It's different for the tradditional production process which have to wait for the dried of material before next step. The new technology allows electrode material stay at liquid status which can reduce 80% of material of making batteries.
